10 Simple Ways to Prepare for Your Photo Session in Idaho – Family, Seniors & More!

Are you getting ready for your senior portraits, refreshing your personal brand, or capturing meaningful moments? Whether you prefer a classic indoor studio look, exploring cool spots around Boise, or embracing the scenic landscapes of McCall, Idaho, I’ve got you covered.

Here are 10 essential prep tips to help you make the most of your photo session—no matter the setting.

1. Choose Clothing That Photographs Well

Choose outfits that fit well and highlight your favorite features. Here are some tried-and-true tips that help everyone look their best on camera:

If you love your waist, try a dress or top that cinches or belts at the middle.

Want to slim your arms? Skip spaghetti straps, cap sleeves, or flutter sleeves—these can make shoulders look broader. Try ¾ sleeves or softly fitted styles instead.

Flowy tops look best with fitted bottoms. Flowy dresses are perfect for adding movement. To add shape and definition, try pairing with a fitted jacket or belt.

V-necklines and scoop necks elongate the neck and flatter most people.

Structured pieces (like a blazer, denim jacket, or tailored top) add polish and shape without clinging.

Avoid anything too baggy, tight or short—if you're fidgeting with it, it's falling off or you can't bend, it's not the right choice.

For group sessions: Coordinate, don’t match. Avoid everyone wearing the exact same outfit—aim for complementary colors and textures instead.

Maternity sessions: Choose clothing that defines your shape. Avoid solid black dresses—they tend to hide the bump instead of highlighting it beautifully.

2. Clothing Color Tips

Certain colors and fabrics naturally photograph better than others. Try these:

Best Colors: Neutrals like ivory, taupe, and soft gray; jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, and navy; or soft pastels like blush, lavender, and sage.

Skip These: Neon, super bright red, bold logos, and busy patterns.

Texture Over Print: Choose fabrics like knits, lace, denim, and flowy materials. They add interest without overwhelming the image.

Avoid white-on-white or black-on-black: These combinations can flatten out in photos and lose detail.

3. Sleep Well: Get plenty of rest the night before your shoot. A well-rested face looks brighter, more relaxed, and naturally radiant—exactly what we want for your photos.

4. Hair & Makeup: Stick with styles and makeup that feel like you. Professional makeup is best, but DIY works if it’s well blended and suited to the lighting.

5. Your Hands Will Show in Photos: Keep nails neat and simple. Avoid dark colors and bold nail art that might draw attention away from you. Men: please keep nails clean underneath.

6. Skin & Face Prep: Keep your skin clean and well-moisturized before your session for a fresh, healthy look. Gentle cleansing and hydration go a long way. For men, a clean shave or neatly trimmed facial hair helps keep things polished.

7. Props and Personal Touches: Add depth to your photos by incorporating meaningful props or accessories that tell your story and reflect your personality.

8. Inspiration Sharing: Send me your favorite inspiration photos a few days before your session so I can tailor the shoot to your style. Don’t get stuck copying images that don’t feel authentic to you!

9. What to Pack: Lip balm, powder, brush, safety pins, extra outfits, and shoes you can walk in outdoors. Don’t forget any props. If you bring company, remind them to stay hydrated and fueled.

10. Plan Something Fun Afterwards: Consider scheduling a treat or activity after your shoot—like grabbing ice cream, dinner, or just hanging out somewhere you love. It’s a great way to celebrate and keep the positive energy going, especially if you’re dressed up and feeling great!

Don’t worry if you’re not used to being in front of the camera—your photographer understands this and will guide you every step of the way. Focus on enjoying the outfit selection and planning, then simply show up ready to be yourself. When you’re relaxed and authentic, that’s when the best photos happen.
