Tips for Your Outdoor Elopement Adventure

Whether you're exchanging vows beside the lake, on a mountain trail, or even in your own backyard, outdoor elopements are full of beauty, intimacy, and moments you’ll remember forever. But nature? She has a mind of her own. And that’s half the fun. Here’s how to plan for an experience that embraces the wild and lets your love story shine—no matter the season.

Wear Something You Won’t Stress About (Because It Might Get Messy)

Outdoor adventures are beautiful—but they can also be messy. Think muddy trails, dusty roads, surprise puddles, or even a little snow depending on the season. Your dress or suit might get dirty. Your boots could be caked in mud. You might be brushing up against bushes or climbing over rocks. And if you’re the adventurous type, maybe even dipping your toes—or your whole self—into a lake.

It’s all part of the experience. The dirt might show a little in the photos, but not the way you think. What really shows is the joy, connection, and that wild kind of love that brought you out here in the first place. So wear something that makes you feel amazing—but won’t ruin your day if it gets a little worn in along the way.

To keep things fresh, consider getting dressed at the location to avoid too much trail wear.

Go with the Flow (and Pack a Few Comforts)

Eloping outdoors means embracing a little adventure—and that’s part of the magic! But with all that wandering (maybe even a bit of hiking), being both pretty and practical is the sweet spot.

For any walk or hike, don’t forget the bug spray, sunscreen, and of course—pack some water. If it’s chilly, a cozy blanket or wrap can keep you warm between shots (and looks great in photos too). A small towel or wipes can be a lifesaver if things get dusty or messy.

Tuck in a compact umbrella for surprise sprinkles or a bit of shade. Lip balm, tissues, a hairbrush, and a hairclip for those windy moments—those little touches keep you feeling fresh and photo-ready. Outdoor elopements aren’t about being picture-perfect—they’re about being present and prepared for whatever your adventure brings.

Choose Footwear That’s Made for the Adventure

Those dress shoes are beautiful, but you might just want to put them on once you arrive at your location. This might not be the day for stilettos—and that’s totally okay. The best shoes for an outdoor elopement are the ones that let you move freely, safely, and comfortably, no matter what terrain you're exploring. From snow boots in the winter to hiking boots for trails or sandals for the beach, choose footwear that fits the season and the setting.

Expect the Unexpected (and Scout Ahead)
One thing about nature? She never follows a script. Weather changes fast, trails shift with the seasons, and even your favorite lookout might look totally different from last year. A warm summer day could turn into a sudden rainstorm, or you might find yourself standing in a snow-covered backyard with 6 feet of snow! If you're planning an outdoor adventure elopement, keep your expectations flexible and your mindset open. Rivers may flood, covering your favorite beach spot, trail conditions can vary, and—yes—mosquitoes may make an uninvited appearance.

That’s why I always recommend checking your location as close to your elopement day as possible. A quick scout the day before (or even the morning of) can save you surprises and help you feel confident in the plan. And while hiring an experienced photographer or guide is a huge help, remember this is your day—make sure the spot feels right for you, not just what looked dreamy on Instagram or in someone else's story.

Plan for Extra Time
Things tend to take longer in the great outdoors—whether it’s walking to a location, dealing with unexpected weather, or simply soaking in the views. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time so you can enjoy the day without feeling rushed.

Want a little more privacy and calm? Consider planning your adventure on a weekday or during the off-season. You’ll likely find fewer crowds, quieter trails, and more room to soak it all in together.

Being prepared (and flexible!) means less stress and more time soaking in the magic of the moment.

Don’t Skip the Special Touches

Eloping doesn’t mean you have to skip the meaningful details. Focus on what makes your relationship unique, and bring along a few personal touches that reflect your shared interests. Maybe it’s a special blanket for sitting on during your vows, or a favorite outdoor activity you can do together after the ceremony. Small keepsakes that mean something to both of you, like a hand-written letter or custom vow books, can add a personal touch without taking up too much space.

Flowers are another way to make your elopement feel extra special. Whether it’s a professionally arranged bouquet or something simple, like a small bunch from a local market, you can still add that romantic touch.

Celebrate with a Sweet Touch

Eloping is all about making the moment your own, so why not add a fun touch to your day? Sharing a small dessert is a great way to mark the occasion. Whether it’s cupcakes, cookies, or a tiny cake to cut and enjoy together, it’s a sweet memory in the making. Don’t forget a celebratory drink to go with it! Whether you’re toasting with champagne, sparkling water, or even enjoying cozy coffee in cute mugs, it’s all about celebrating this special moment in your style. (Just a heads-up—champagne is fun, but it can get sticky if you decide to pop the cork!)

Let the Day Be What It Is

Most importantly, remember that this day is about the two of you. It’s not about chasing the "perfect" weather or an Instagram-worthy location—it’s about celebrating your unique connection, your love, and the adventure you're on together. Whether you’re laughing through the rain, finding warmth in a cozy blanket, or dancing in the golden light of a surprise sunset, your elopement will be perfect because it's yours.

When you let go of the idea of perfection and embrace whatever the day brings, that's when the real magic happens. The best moments? They're the unplanned, unexpected ones—the ones you couldn’t have scripted. So, embrace the wild, let the weather surprise you, and make memories that will last a lifetime!
