What to Wear Tips for Senior Photos

Congratulations, it’s Senior Year! Whether you’re planning your senior photo session in the beautiful Idaho mountains of McCall, by the Boise River, or in the cool urban vibe of Nampa’s historic brick buildings, the first step is deciding what to wear.

Don’t worry! With these expert recommendations from Cherise of White Fox Photography, you’ll look amazing no matter the setting. From scenic outdoor locations to personalized themed looks, these tips will ensure you feel confident and look your best in every shot. Be sure to read through all the details—what you wear can make all the difference!

Colors & Patterns

Avoid: Zebra stripes, busy prints, neon colors, and clothing with large logos or pictures. They do not photograph well and are distracting

Wear Instead: Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns. Navy blue and olive green are great choices for any season and flatter most skin tones.

Always bring at least one top in a solid color (other than just black or white) with no patterns or prints.

Add a Fun, Themed Look

Want to show off your personality? Bring something fun like a band shirt, your favorite hoodie, funky suit, camo, or even a big tulle dress!

These are great for a few unique images that really capture you. Just keep in mind: bold or themed looks work best as a special extra, not the main outfit for your whole session.

Baggy & Oversized Clothing

Avoid: Pleated pants/shorts, bulky cargo styles, and tops that hit past your butt.

If you need a belt to hold it up, it’s too big.

Wear Instead: Choose clothes that fit well — not too tight, not too loose. You can still wear the baggy look, but make sure your pants stay up and tops hit above your butt for a more flattering fit.

For Girls: A bodysuit or fitted top helps eliminate bulk around the waist and balances the looseness of the pants.

If you love the crop top, choose ones that allow you to lift your arms without revealing anything. Super short or strapless tops can restrict movement and make posing difficult.

Prioritize Comfort & Mobility for a Better Variety of Images

Avoid: Clothing that restricts movement, outfits that are too tight or too short, and shoes that are difficult to walk in.

Wear Instead: Choose outfits that let you move freely — you should be able to sit, bend, and pose naturally without adjusting your clothes constantly.

Shoes Matter: Even if you love a certain pair of heels or white sneakers for the look, bring them — but also make sure to bring shoes you can walk in. We’ll likely be walking between spots at your location (sometimes across dirt paths, grassy areas, or even riverbanks), so having comfortable backup shoes is a must.

For Girls: If you're wearing a strappy dress or light-colored outfit, test it in natural light ahead of time. Make sure it’s not see-through, undergarments don’t show, and straps stay in place. Move around, lift your arms, and check from the back — you want to feel confident from every angle.

Try It All On Ahead of Time: Don't wait until the day of your session to discover a fit issue or discomfort. Try on everything — including shoes and accessories — and walk, sit, and move around to make sure you feel great in what you’ve chosen. Confidence comes from comfort, and it shows in every image.

Mix Fashion Trends with Timeless Classics

While trendy outfits can be fun, they may not always translate well in photos. Balance your wardrobe with a mix of trendy and classic pieces for versatile and timeless looks.

Jeans paired with simple, clean, and well-fitted t-shirts or tops are timeless options that look great on both guys and girls.

Embrace Flowy Dresses & Skirts

Flowy dresses and skirts can create stunning looks in photos. Not only do they allow for a wider range of poses than a fitted dress or skirt they also give your hands something to play with.

Consider Dressier Options

Bring along a dressier outfit, such as something you wore to prom or homecoming, to add variety to your photo session.

Consider Your Background & Setting

Your outfit should complement the location. Here’s how to pick colors that work well with different settings:

For urban looks & locations: (brick walls, alleyways, murals), warm neutrals like ivory, camel, and olive, or muted colors like dusty blue, sage, and soft mustard work well.

In nature settings: (forests, fields, beaches, mountains), earth tones like warm browns, muted greens, soft pastels like blush pink, baby blue, and bold colors like navy, emerald, and maroon are great choices.

For fall/rustic locations: (woods, fields), rich tones like emerald green, deep purple, maroon, and warm shades like camel and mustard complement the environment.

In spring: (flower fields, gardens), soft pastels like blush pink, lavender, and peach, plus light neutrals like ivory and soft beige are perfect.

During winter: (snowy landscapes, mountains), deep tones like cranberry, navy, forest green, and lighter neutrals like ivory and soft gray work beautifully.

Looking for Colors That Look Great Anywhere?

If you're unsure about what colors to choose, navy, olive green, charcoal gray, and muted blue are all great options. These shades complement various backgrounds, and look great on most skin tones, making them perfect for any season or location!

Pairing Black & White

While black and white are classic choices, avoid wearing them as your only options. These can blend into certain backgrounds, so be sure to add something to make the outfit pop:

Pair black or white with something else: Denim, leather, & sweaters can add depth and interest.

Remember, bring other colors in addition to black and white to create a variety of looks and avoid blending into your surroundings.

Bring Fun accessories: Like jewelry, hats, sneakers, & boots to introduce a pop of color & variety.
